Two gastropubs have recently opened their doors on Roblin Boulevard, and with the success of both it has become clear that Charleswood is primed and ready for good eating. At Boulevard Pub & Bistro, gaggles of chattering diners eagerly gather for amped up pub fare.
Grey brick, dark wooden tables and gentle lighting create rustic luxe ambiance. Thoughtful plating makes use of white china and wooden boards, dressed with fresh greens. Generous entrées add a sweet mix of fruit to salty flavours for a well-balanced spread.
Appetizers are diverse, from chicken fingers to escargot, but Thai chilli tacos are the starter of choice, the parcels packing major heat. Slow roasted pulled chicken and a scoop of corn Pico de gallo topped with crispy wontons combine cool with caliente.
Nods to locally sourced ingredients include crispy pickerel cheeks, tossed in hemp seed and lemon pepper. Herbivores will love the selection of greens portioned for sharing. Salads are crisp and bright, laced with julienne carrots. Fresh fruit salad is naturally flavourful with robust doses of strawberries, blueberries, pineapple and chopped cucumber to keep palates pleased and waistlines in check. Roasted beet and caramelized onion salad with pea shoots and a healthy pile of greens is another joyful jumble.
Go all in with things between bread, such as the soy ginger grilled chicken burger. Nestled in a plate of fries, the bun just barely contains the meat. Pillow-like bread soaks up juices from tender chicken breast. Pickles bring on the tang, while fresh pineapple salsa adds unexpected sweetness. The double stuffed pork chop is a highlight from the menu of mains. Juicy and tender meat topped with mango and macerated cherry chutney sings with tart flavour.
